Cleaning Your Upholstered Furniture

As I mentioned before, I am currently in the market for a new sofa. This dreadful task is very nearly over as I believe my husband and I have settled on a winner. And by settled, I mean I’m not getting the leather I wanted. It’s ok. Really. I’ll probably live.

The truth is, upholstered furniture, in addition to being less costly, also opens up more choices in color, pattern, and even the shape of the sofa. We chose a sofa brand that includes a variety of slipcovers, so even the worst of mishaps could be fixed in the end. But what about the day-to-day maintenance of your upholstered furniture? Here are three ways to clean and refresh the fabrics in your home.

1. The Right Vacuum Attachments

Using the correct attachment to remove dirt, dust, and pet hair is key. If you own a central vacuum system, the options are endless. Take a look at these Air & Electric Turbine Brushes. Using the suction of your central vacuum or its own electric motor, a Turbo brush uses its rotating bristles to deep clean fabrics in your home. Better than suction only, the bristles divide and refresh each fabric fiber, releasing even the deepest dirt and debris.

If you don’t have a central vacuum system, most canister and upright vacuums have optional attachments to help clean your home. Miele vacuums include a special upholstery brush and crevice nozzle but there’s even an optional mattress brush to deep clean your bedding.

2. The Power of Steam

Perhaps my favorite upholstery cleaning weapon, a powerful steamer can do more than just lift a set-in stain. Reliable’s high-temperature line of Enviromate Steamers also act as deodorizers and sanitizers. These amazing steam cleaners use extra hot, high pressure steam to penetrate fabrics and kill bacteria, pathogens, allergens, and even dangers like E Coli, Salmonella, and…gross, I don’t even want to say it…bed bugs.

The Reliable PRONTO P7 is a compact, handheld steamer that really packs a punch. Reaching temperatures as high as 320º F, it can effectively release deep stains from upholstery, clothing, carpets, or even hard surfaces like tile grout. All the while, neutralizing any odors and eliminating harmful germs.

Another fabulous Reliable steamer is the BRIO EB250. The wheels help you maneuver it throughout your home and the large water tank offers 45 minutes of steam use.  But what really makes this a triple threat is the floor attachments. With the BRIO you can easily steam hard flooring to remove stains and grime. Buy it for upholstery accidents, use it weekly to disinfect your floors!
