Central Vacuum Filter Maintenance

There are a handful of videos on our Central Vacuum Stores’ YouTube Channel that continue to receive the most views year after year. Sometimes we make a tutorial hoping to help a few people and end up shocked by the THOUSANDS of views it receives. Our video on “How To Maintain A Beam Style Filter” is just one such video. As it turns out, a lot of people were looking for answers regarding their central vacuum filter. Over 80,000 people, in fact.

inverted-central-vacuum-filter-maintain-help-cleanA permanent, Beam style, inverted central vacuum filter that features a weighted bottom is installed in numerous central vacuum brands including Beam, Electrolux, Honeywell, Husky, CanaVac, Rhinovac, and more. These inverted filters are described as “self-cleaning” because a weighted sand-bag at the base of the filter shakes off residual debris at the end of each vacuum.

How A Self Cleaning, Inverted Central Vacuum Filter Works:

inverted_bag_lgAs you power on the central vacuum, the inverted, cone-shaped filter is pulled up by the vacuum suction towards the top of the unit. Waste enters the power unit. The heavier items fall directly into the waste bag or canister while the filter catches the smallest particles and allows the air to exhaust.

When the vacuum is turned off and the suction no longer holds the filter up, it drops back into the waste canister. The weighted bottom allows it to fall with an added oomph, which shakes off dirt and dust lingering on the material.

In other central vacuum models, a filter may require changing every six months or so to not disrupt suction. With a self-cleaning, Beam style filter, you may never have to issue a repair or replacement. Over time, if the filter begins retaining excess debris on the material, you can simply wipe the fabric with a damp cloth or use a stand-alone vacuum or shop-vac to give it a deep clean.

How To Maintain A Central Vacuum Filter:

Central Vacuum Stores’ owner, Roger Ambrose, explains the benefits and maintenance requirements of an inverted, Beam style filter.

Is Dirt Stuck In My Central Vacuum Filter?

One of the repeated questions we receive regarding a Beam style, inverted, self-cleaning central vacuum filter is from customers concerned there is something stuck inside the filter. People often confuse the weighted pouch at the bottom of the filter for collected debris. As a result, we receive calls and comments asking the best way to remove the load or replace the filter.

Rest at ease! The weighted pouch is there intentionally and serves an important purpose. There is no need to remove or replace it. In fact, you’d be pretty disappointed to find that the new central vacuum filter you order will have the same heavy load in it!

DIY Central Vacuum Motor Replacement

central-vacuum-motor-replacement-repair-part-how-toA very common central vacuum repair is the replacement of the power unit’s motor. In some cases, the vacuum motor may begin to lose suction over time as the unit ages. In other instances, dirt or debris has managed to enter the motor chamber and caused the unit to fail suddenly. Whatever the situation, replacing a central vacuum motor is both straightforward and easily handled without a professional (as long as you don’t mind getting dirty.)

Replacing Your Central Vacuum Motor – Step 1

The first step may surprise you, but it’s important to start here. The first thing you must address before replacing your central vacuum power unit is whether or not it’s worth it. There are several key questions you should ask before starting down the road of a central vacuum motor replacement.

Is It Worth Replacing A Central Vacuum Motor?

1) How dirty are you willing to get?

IMG_0127Yes, replacing your central vacuum motor is a true DIY project. But it’s important to mention that it will be a dirty job. To access your existing motor and replace it with a new one, you’ll need to get into the inner workings of the power unit. This will be slightly gross. Dirt, dust, and God knows what else will have accumulated within the motor chamber over the life of the power unit. In honesty, this is a really good time to clean it all out. But this may be more than you bargained for, so it’s worth mentioning up front.

2) What about a warranty?

If you’re replacing your central vacuum motor, odds are your warranty – if you had one – has already expired. So it’s important to ask yourself just how much time, money, and energy you’re willing to put into a power unit that is no longer under any kind of coverage. Will you be changing this motor only to have something else break next month? New power units can come with warranties between 5-10 years. If you’re the kind of person who wants to play the long odds and not opt for the short fix, simply buying a new power unit would be the best call.

3) Are you ready to enter the 21st century of central vacuums?

0066701_electrolux-pu3900-power-unit

If you’re replacing the motor in a dated power unit, you really NEED to shop around first because central vacuum systems have developed right alongside the rest of the electronics world. For example, new Electrolux models feature an LED screen and an internal computer system that monitors the power unit’s efficiency.

Perhaps most notable in the realm of central vacuum cleaners is the addition of True Cyclonic Filtration. True Cyclonc was a real game-changer because it brought us near-perfect suction. No loss of suction and zero exhausted particles (when installed properly to the exterior.) If your current unit is bagged or filtered, you’d really be blowing an opportunity for a healthier home by not researching an updated power unit first.

4) Do you wish you were more Green?

Thanks to greater importance being placed on energy efficiency and green initiatives, new central vacuum power units can save you money and help you be environmentally conscious. Most new models will run better while using less electricity than your dated unit. Less electricity use = more money in your pocket.

5) Do you need more suction?

(shown to actual scale)

It’s true that updating your unit’s motor will give it a fresh boost of power. However, your existing central vacuum will have limits, even with a new motor. If the system you currently have provides disapointing suction, why install a $200 motor in it? It’s time to buy a more powerful unit. When in doubt, “the more power, the better.

Just take a look at the images above. If you’re replacing your NuTone unit with a motor half the size of one of the newer cyclonic models, doesn’t that have you second guessing what you’re missing out on?

6) Is it a wise investment?

Replacing your central vacuum motor is a DIY project, so you may feel like it’s a “free” option. However, many customers are surprised to learn the expense of a new motor. New central vacuum motors cost between $100 – $300. Often changing your motor requires changing the filter or carbon brush, adding an additional $100. You could spend $400 replacing the motor on your old, dated central vacuum! In this case, the choice is really a no-brainer. Take, for example, this Imperium CV260: It features a three-year warranty, 540 Air Watts, at an incredibly efficient 10.1 Amps. All this for around $300! You really need to run the numbers before installing a new motor. The math usually doesn’t work.

7) What’s the condition of the rest of your system?

All-In-One-Central-Vac-Kit-Saves-MoneyWhen I asked our support team what was the #1 reason people opted to replace their central vacuum power unit instead of the motor, they said it was the added expense of updating tools and accessories. Almost always, if the motor has gone bad, the floor tools and cleaning accessories are equally dated. When a customer begins to add up the costs of also replacing the carpet powerhead, hose, or accessory kit, it almost ALWAYS makes sense to simply buy a new central vacuum kit. Buying as a kit saves you money, and can be significantly less money than buying a replacement motor and mix-matched tools.

Replacing Your Central Vacuum Motor – Step 2

If you still decide to replace your central vacuum motor, your first step is to find the correct replacement motor. This is incredibly easy using this Central Vacuum Motor Finder tool. You simply choose your central vacuum power unit brand and model from the drop-down menus and you’re automatically taken to the correct replacement motor page for your vacuum.

Replacing Your Central Vacuum Motor – Step 3

Once you’ve found, ordered, and received your central vacuum power unit replacement motor, the real work begins! While central vacuum motors differ in some ways, replacing them is pretty uniform across brands and models.

  1. Remove the lid or access door – Most units have two or three screws that hold the lid or door in place. Simply unscrew the lid from the power unit body and remove it. Some models will feature springs, filters, or foam around the motor. Remove those items too. If helpful, take a photo to help remember how it was assembled.
  2. Detach the existing motor – Most motors feature three or four wires attached to the power unit’s relay. We suggest our novice DIY customers use their phone to take a picture of the existing wiring before disconnecting. Then, when it comes time to connect the new motor, you can easily replicate the original.
  3. Connect the new motor – It’s as simple as dropping the new motor in and duplicating the same wiring. Attach the ground wire and additional wires as before.
  4. Replace any padding and screw on the lid/door – Connect any springs and replace any foam or filters as they were. Finally, screw the lid back into place…and you’re done!

Central Vacuum Crevice Attachments

We’ve said it a million times on this blog, but the real beauty of a central vacuum system is their versatility. Case and point: crevice tools.

I know what you’re thinking. What could be so exciting about crevice tools? It’s true there isn’t anything necessarily glamorous about a crevice tool…until you need one. You drop shredded cheese under the refrigerator or discover a moldy french fry in the inner workings of your child’s car seat and suddenly the lowly crevice tool is man’s greatest invention.

Crevice Tool Attachment Styles

Crevice tools come in a variety of styles designed to reach a variety of places.

Under Appliance Wand / Under Refrigerator Tool

Perhaps the most recognized specialty crevice tools are those made to reach under appliances. Notably, homeowners are often looking for a way to clean underneath their refrigerators. And with good reason.

Refrigerators require cleaning more than any other kitchen appliance. Underneath a refrigerator can be a collection of dirt, dust, and food. What makes this really problematic is that the debris acts as a foothold for mold and mildew to form. Additionally, if your refrigerator vent is located at the bottom of the unit, the mixture can also clog up your refrigerator’s workings.

under-refrigerator-appliance-crevice-wand-vacuum-toolOur favorite under appliance wand is this 36-inch, flexible under-refrigerator crevice tool from Imperium. A few, key features make this extended crevice tool so awesome. First, it’s extra long! Reaching 36-inches, it’s sure to reach all the way underneath your refrigerator.

Second, the flexible plastic is so nice. It allows you to reach around corners and refrigerator feet to ensure you’re cleaning everywhere.

Lastly, the flat suction opening. Unlike a standard crevice tool, this under refrigerator crevice wand has a flat, square opening on the face of it. This allows you to cover the whole surface under your refrigerator. We recommend you take one swipe with the opening against the floor and a second with the opening vacuuming the bottom of the refrigerator.

Standard Crevice Tool

Crevice attachments are a standard vacuum accessory and often are included with a set or kit. But there are a variety of lengths and features that can set one style apart from the next.

Crevice-Vacuum-Tool-Attachment-Wand

For example, some crevice wands feature suction relief holes at the entry point. This keeps the wand from locking onto a material due to powerful suction. This is a key design element to consider if what you plan on vacuuming is delicate. Even some fabrics and upholstery should be best handled by a crevice tool with suction control like this to keep from being damaged.

extended-long-crevice-vacuum-attachment-tool.pngAnother important feature to consider is the length of your crevice tool. If you’re looking to vacuum a hard-to-reach area like under an appliance or furniture piece, you will want to choose an extended crevice tool with extra length. This extra long crevice tool measures 36-inches! It’s great for tall ceilings or deep sofas.

Vacuum-Crevice-Wand-Tool-Flexible-Bending-Attachment.jpgFinally, consider if a flexible crevice wand is something you need. The benefit of a flexible crevice tool is obvious. It allows you to reach around corners or obstacles and in small places. This flexible crevice wand from Vacumaid is 23-inches long and super bendy!

Specialty Crevice Tool Sets For Auto Detailing & Electronics

Vacuum-Crevice-Set-Extra-Long-Extension-Car-Auto-Detail

Perhaps one of the most frequent uses for crevice tools and wands is in car detailing. It’s hard to imagine another space with so many nooks and crannies than the interior of your car. And as it’s also so well-used, it’s bound to collect all kinds of stuff!

This Centec “All Things Crevice” tool package includes:

  • Flexible Crevice Tool 1.5″ x 24″
  • Flexible Crevice Tool 1.5″ x 36″
  • Standard Black Crevice Tool 1.5″ x 13″

  • Adaptor for use with standard 1.25″ vacuum cleaner hose

Vacuum-Crevice-Mini-Electronic-Computer-SetAnother popular need in the world of crevice tools is for our everyday electronics. Computer keyboards and towers are notoriously difficult to keep clean and require smaller crevice wands and vacuum attachments. This Mini-Vac Attachment Set from Imperium includes:

  • Straight extension wand
  • Curved extension wand
  • Oval brush
  • Round brush
  • Crevice tool

Vacuflo Paper Bag Central Vacuum Systems

Vacuflo-Central-Vacuum-BagsVacuflo central vacuum systems featuring paper bags offer the convenience of easy dirt disposal. Because the waste vacuumed into the system is contained within a bag, the person responsible for changing the container isn’t exposed to the gross and sometimes dangerous particles inside.

Vacuflo Filtered Central Vacuum Systems

Vacuflo-Central-Vacuum-FilterVacuflo central vacuum systems featuring permanent filters are very popular models. These systems will first filter debris using cyclonic separation and then the suctioned particles will pass through a pleated canister filter for secondary filtration. This filter is designed so that suction is hindered as little as possible.

Vacuflo Cyclonic Central Vacuum Systems

Vacuflo-Central-Vacuum-Cyclonic-Power-Units.jpegVacuflo central vacuum systems featuring cyclonic filtration provide the absolute BEST level of suction and air quality. The cyclonic Vacuflo models must be exhausted to the exterior of the home so they may not fit every installation. But once installed, true cyclonic filtration means there will be almost no loss of suction as the vacuum is used month after month. Larger waste is collected in the dirt canister at the base of the unit and can be emptied as needed. The smallest dirt, dust, and particles are pushed upwards using cyclonic technology and exhausted outside. Nothing is left remaining in your home’s air.

Vacuflo Central Vacuum Carpet Power Heads

Perhaps what Vacuflo is best known for are their central vacuum power heads and carpet tools. Vacuflo power heads are popular due to their durability and flexibility. Even if your central vacuum system is another brand, a Vacuflo power head will very likely fit your system. Additionally, they offer tools for both electric and non-electric systems.

The Vacuflo Turbocat is a best-selling power head. They’re affordable and quality built. The Turbocat line is a non-electric, turbo style carpet cleaner. This means the power head uses the suction of the vacuum to spin the rollerbar within the power head. The roller bar (or beater bar) then agitates the carpet fibers and releases dirt.

Turbocat models are designed to be used with non-electric central vacuum systems. If you’re unsure of the type of system currently installed in your home, call 1-800-221-8227 and we can walk you through the steps to find out.

The Vacuflo Edge is designed to be used with electric central vacuum systems. The power head is powered by a separate electrical current that runs through the vacuum hose. If you’re unsure of the type of system currently installed in your home, call 1-800-221-8227 and we can walk you through the steps to find out.

Central Vacuum Hose – Review & Buying Guide

We receive calls and inquiries all day long from customers hoping to find a new central vacuum hose for their existing system. It became so common, in fact, that when we built our new website last year we created a section called “Everything Hoses” just to encompass all our central vacuum hose information in one spot.

central-vacuum-hose-replacementIf you’re looking to repair, replace, or buy accessories for your current central vacuum hose, we have the product for you. And if you’re looking for a central vacuum hose to go with a new system you’re installing, we can find the right item for your needs, too.

Central Vacuum Hose By Brand

A question we’re asked A LOT is whether a customer has to buy a hose from the same brand name as their central vacuum system. In most cases, the answer is no. But there are a handful of situations where a customer has a model that is not compatible with universal central vacuum hoses. (For example, older NuTone systems can be tricky.)

If you suspect your system will not be compatible, it’s best to just call us and ask. There is almost nothing we haven’t seen before, so call 1-800-221-8227 to get a quick answer and a little guidance to the right central vacuum hose.

Universal Central Vacuum Hose

central-vacuum-hose-handleThe benefit of purchasing a universal central vacuum hose is simply that it can save you money. Off-brands tend to be less expensive than the main, most notable brands. For example, Cen-Tec makes central vacuum products and is one of the leading central vacuum distributors throughout the US and Canada. Their central vacuum hoses offer a lot of bang for the buck and will fit almost any central vacuum system.

Central Vacuum Hose Types

It’s important before you begin shopping to determine what type of central vacuum hose or hose system you currently have. A great place to start is at the inlet. When the hose meets the inlet, you’ll find key features that help categorize your central vacuum hose.

central-vacuum-hose-info

Central Vacuum Hose With Standard Connection

A standard inlet will feature low voltage wiring. The central vacuum hose will have a metal cuff at the connection that will carry the electrical current into the hose. A standard inlet will accommodate a “pigtail” hose style, as well. This hose will feature the same metal cuff at the connection, but will also have a separate electrical cord that plugs into a wall outlet.

Your Standard Central Vacuum Hose Will Look Like Either Of These

Central Vacuum Hose With Direct Connection

A central vacuum hose featuring “direct connect,” electrical components will have metal prongs on the end of the hose that connect into the wall inlet. When you plug in your hose, these prongs carry the electrical current through wiring that is contained within the hose structure. This allows you to use electric carpeting powerheads and wand systems.

Generic Miele FJM Bags

IMG_0125
How a generic bag almost killed our Miele

You can find generic versions of the Miele FJM bags on the internet and they tend to cost less. However, we tested one of these bags in our own Miele and the result was disasterous. Generic Miele bags SHOULD NEVER be used in your vacuum cleaner. The damage they can cause could completely kill your vacuum motor and using a generic bag will void your warranty. Saving a few dollars on a bag could end up costing you hundreds. Unless you want to buy a new vacuum cleaner, don’t put the junky generic bags in your existing Miele.

How To Buy Miele FJM Bags

Husky Central Vacuum System Review

Review Of Husky Brand Central Vacuums

Over our many years in business – we first opened our doors in 1948 – we’ve watched numerous vacuum brands rise and fall in popularity. Husky central vacuum systems have recently seen an uptick in interest, and so we thought it best to give them a thorough review.

Husky Central Vacuums are manufactured in Canada by Nuera Air Corporation. They have several different models with a range of suction power and features. The Flex Husky central vacuum system is sold via the largest home improvement store in the world. This, in itself, has certainly helped to push the Husky name to the top of the sales charts.

Although the familiarity of shopping from a well-known retailer is a draw, there’s a lot more to choosing a central vacuum system than “brand recognition.”  So we decided to compare the popular Husky package (the Husky Flex) against another two, top-selling electric central vacuum sets and see how it stands up.

Husky Central Vacuum Comparison

When seeing the side-by-side comparison of the Husky Flex system against the Imperium CV3200 Prime and Rhino Vac 399R-L Classic, a few things should be noted.

Filtration –

The Husky Flex system features a machine-washable filter bag that protects the motor from the small particles exhausted through the unit. While the option of machine washing your Husky filter sounds like a nice feature, don’t underestimate the level of dirt, grime, and build-up that will accumulate on the filter. It will require a washing several times a year and will be quite a gross task. When the build-up begins to grow, it will negatively impact your level of suction.

In comparison, the Imperium CV3200 features a unique self-cleaning, inverted filter bag. The filter bag features a weighted bottom. As the vacuum is turned on, the bag is lifted by the suction and stays busy filtering out the smallest particles. When the vacuum is turned off, the bag will drop with some force, thanks to the weight at the bottom. This allows the bag to shake off anything stuck to the surface into the dirt canister. Additionally, the Imperium bag features Surf-Tex™. This coating resists bacteria, mold, and mildew growth and can capture particles as small as .3 microns. The result: the inverted filter bag on the Imperium unit will only require a yearly cleaning.

In regards to waste collection, both the Husky and Imperium models offer an optional disposal bag or liner. This is an excellent feature for anyone concerned with emptying the canister and breathing in harmful allergens or particles. The Rhino Vac does not offer the addition of a bag or liner. It only features the dirt canister to be emptied.

Filtration Winner: Imperium CV3200

Included Accessories –

Included with the Husky Flex is what we in the industry would consider a “basic” package: the necessary floor tools (electric carpet tool and hard surface brush) and the standard added accessories. The compared Rhino Vac 399R-L central vacuum set features the identical items but is $65 LESS THAN the Husky central vac set. If the basics are all you need from a central vacuum attachment set, we would recommend the Rhino Vac system over the Husky Flex, just to save you some money.

Husky-Hose-Sock
A hose sock can cost around $55

In contrast, if you’re looking for a complete set of central vacuum attachments, the Imperium CV3200 Prime kit is the way to go. It includes all the same tools as the Husky and additional must-haves. The hose sock, for example, is incredibly important to protect your baseboards, furniture legs, and cabinetry. The ridges that allow a hose to be “crush-proof” unfortunately add a texture to the surface which can prove abrasive to delicate surfaces, especially over time. This is why a hose sock is a must! With the Husky system, you would need to buy it separately. Online they cost between $54-$85, so it’s a real added expense.

Additionally, the Imperium system includes a mini-attachment set for small cleaning needs like car detailing, computer keyboards, in and around tight spaces, etc. However, because the Rhino Vac set includes a sufficient amount of tools and costs less than both the Husky and Imperium sets, we’re choosing it as a winner, too.

Accessories Winner/Price: Rhino Vac 399R-L

Accessories Winner/Quantity: Imperium CV3200

Suction Power –

The suction power of a central vacuum system is measured in a few ways:

  • Water Lift – measures the vacuum’s ideal ability to lift in pure suction. We say “ideal ability” because this number does not reflect real-life actualities like filters or bags in place, bends and turns in vacuum piping, or the age of the motor.
  • CFM – Cubic Feet of air per Minute the vacuum can move.
  • Air Watts – A calculation of the other two measurements for an overall vacuum rating. CFM x Water Lift / 8.5 = Air Watts

Factors to consider in addition to the stats on the chart:

  • The Motor – One of the ways vacuum manufacturers have begun to cut corners is to install powerful but cheaply made motors in their units. These motors may only last a few years and can cost hundreds of dollars to replace. While a system may receive high numbers in the initial testing, it’s important to look at overall reviews of the long-term use of a power unit. How well a vacuum motor ages is equally important, if not more important, than it’s power out of the box.
    • Rhino Vac systems are widely revered for their high-quality motors. That’s why they offer a 15-Year warranty. Those things just last and last.
  • Support – The Husky Flex package is sold in a giant home improvement store and customers think that’s a good thing. But they’re wrong. When choosing a specialty appliance like a central vacuum system, you don’t want to rely on a staff that is completely untrained in the product. In fact, although the Husky Flex package is sold on the retailer’s website, they don’t sell repair parts, powerheads, installation components, or even vacuum bags for the Flex. It’s a bad omen.
  • Conversely, the Imperium CV3200 is manufactured by Lindsay Manufacturing in Ponca City, Oklahoma and sold via Central Vacuum Stores in St. Petersburg, Florida. The CV3200 system comes with free tech support, a DIY installation guide, and the knowledge of 65+ years in the vacuum industry. So, you’re covered in any situation.
  • The Filtration – The Water Lift and CFM are measured in “pure suction,” meaning, without real-world application. What they don’t factor in is the filtration methods which begin limiting the suction power with every use. The key is to choose a central vacuum with a good motor and filtration method. The Husky central vacuum has a higher Air Watts rating, however, their filter bag style will limit that number when it’s actually being used in your home. As the build-up begins to form on the filter, it will lessen the suction power even more. So, although it looks like the Husky is significantly more powerful than the Rhino Vac and Imperium models, it will not maintain that suction level with use.

Suction Power Winner/On Paper – Husky Flex

Suction Power Winner/For Actual Use – Imperium CV3200

Overall Review Of Husky Flex Central Vacuum System

The Husky Flex Central Vacuum system is a pretty good product. However, we think you would be equally happy with the Rhino Vac system (while saving some money) and ultimately more happy with the Imperium CV3200 system for only slightly more money.

Miele GN Vacuum Bags

Miele-GN-Vacuum-Bag-Install

Miele GN AirClean Replacement Vacuum Bags

If you own a Miele vacuum cleaner, you already know about its unmatched filtration. That’s likely the reason you purchased one in the first place! But maintaining that exceptional level of filtration requires maintaining the components inside it. Namely, the exhaust filter, the motor filter, and, most importantly, the GN AirClean vacuum bag.

Working hard inside your Miele vacuum cleaner is the GN AirClean disposable bag. When you look at the different features, you’ll be surprised how much you appreciate all the GN bag does!

  • Self-Sealing CollarMiele-GN-Bag-Automatic-Self-ClosingPerhaps the coolest feature on the Miele GN AirClean bags is the automatic closure on the bag itself. When it’s time to change your bag and you open the lid on the vacuum canister, a circular flap automatically closes the bag’s opening. This means the dirt, allergens, and additional gross contents in the bag are kept safely inside. You’re not at risk of breathing in or spilling out all that you worked hard to vacuum away! Once it’s time to close it up again, the flap remains sealed until the hose connection is pushed against it upon closing the lid. Now you’re ready to vacuum!
  • Miele-GN-Vacuum-Bag-Box-Pack-4High-Tech Bag Construction – The GN bag itself is pretty high-tech. It’s made of patented material that Miele has perfected over time, appropriately called SoftStructure. Thanks to flexible fibers, the GN bag can stretch and grow with limited risk of punctures or tears. But that’s not to say it’s “breathable.” The GN bag’s fibers help contain even the tiniest particles and assist in the Miele’s overall exceptional filtration. Very little ever escapes a genuine Miele GN bag, in fact the GN bag offers 99.9% filtration using their innovative SoftStructure technology.
  • Miele-GN-Vacuum-Bag-Replace-How-ToEfficient And Long-Lasting – The GN bag’s high-tech features mentioned above do more than just add to the vacuum cleaner’s filtration. They also allow the bag to have a long life, meaning less frequent changes and fewer costs associated with maintaining the unit. An average Miele user changes their GN bag about every month. A home with pets may require a fresh vacuum bag every three weeks to accommodate the added fur from cats and dogs. Additionally, because the bag is so exceptional at capturing dirt and dust particles, you only need to change the exhaust filter once a year. Another cost-saving benefit!

Best Vacuum Cleaners For Pets

Fred P Fluff
Fred P Fluff, Cat Extraordinaire

When I was three, a family friend visited for Christmas and brought with him a gray and cream, Himalayan kitten. You could hardly see his sweet, little face behind all the fur. As he scampered around our home, examining his new residence (and trying to hide from my brother’s and my wild excitement,) all you could see was a shapeless, wispy streak of hair darting between furniture legs. We wanted to name him “Fluffy.” My father opted for Fred P. Fluff.

Pets bring joy and love and can make a family whole. But, it’s not without work. Pets are a responsibility, plain and simple. While their unconditional love and companionship are invaluable to many pet parents, there is an actual cost for the proper care and maintenance of not only the pet itself but a pet-friendly home. Nothing makes this more apparent than the constant cleaning of pet fur.

A Vacuum Cleaner For Pets

It’s no wonder, then, that one of the most searched inquiries on my blog is in regards to the best vacuum cleaners for pets. Pet moms and dads around the world share a common goal: get rid of the fur! And a standard vacuum cleaner just does not do the job. What you need is a vacuum cleaner designed specifically for pets and their owners. A vacuum cleaner made to specifically remove fur from a variety of surfaces. A vacuum cleaner made specifically to prevent the spread of allergens like dander. What you need is Miele’s Cat & Dog Series.

The Cat & Dog Vacuum Series From Miele

0086020_miele-cat-and-dog-complete-c3-vacuumMiele vacuum cleaners are already one of the most respected vacuum brands in the world. That much is already established. But what they conquered with their Cat & Dog series is something really special. They worked from the ground-up to address the specific needs of pet-friendly homes and created two, new cleaners for pet owners.

Cat & Dog Complete C3 Vacuum Cleaner

The Miele Cat & Dog Complete C3 is Miele’s compact, canister version. Read about what makes this such an incredible, pet-friendly machine below.

The Cat & Dog Complete C3 includes THREE cleaning tools!

The Miele Cat & Dog Complete C3 comes with THREE tools and THREE accessories to vacuum any surface in your home. The Electro Plus Electrobrush is designed to powerfully clean even dense carpeting. The electric power is key. A Turbo style or Combo style powerhead will not properly remove pet dander from carpeting, leaving you with an allergen nightmare. The Cat & Dog C3 also includes a Parquet Hard Floor tool to vacuum all your hard surface such as tile, wood, laminate, and more.

But what’s really exciting is that the Cat & Dog is the only canister to come complete with the Handheld Turbo Brush. This amazing tool is perfect for powerfully vacuuming away pet fur and hair from small surfaces like upholstery, stair treads, car seat, or bedding. You’ll wonder how you ever lived without it!

Includes:

  • Electro Plus Electrobrush SEB228
  • Parquet Twister floor tool SBB300-3
  • Turbo Brush STB101
  • 4.76-quart capacity, G/N AirClean FilterBag
  • Active AirClean Charcoal Filter
  • Electric Hose
  • Stainless Steel Electric Telescopic Wand
  • Onboard Tool Storage: Natural Bristle Dusting Brush, Upholstery Nozzle, Crevice tool

In addition to the essential tools you can see, the Cat & Dog Complete C3 features essential components on the interior. Because Miele understood that pet odors can be as disturbing as pet fur, they included the Active AirClean Charcoal filter. Designed with activated charcoal, the filter captures and eliminates odors from within the vacuum, keeping them from being exhausted into the room. Anyone who’s owned a lesser quality cleaner understands how smelly a vacuum can become in a pet home. It isn’t long before the entire unit smells like wet dog. But the charcoal filter solves that!

Additional Features:

  • Canister Construction – Exclusive 12-Stage AirClean Sealed System to keep the dirt inside the vacuum
  • 1200-watt, low-noise, high-output Miele-made Vortex Motor System
  • Impressive 36 ft operating radius with an automatic one-touch cord rewind
  • Ergonomic carrying handle
  • On/Off control right on the handle
  • Lightweight skeleton construction
  • 3D bumper strip
  • Foot operated suction control via +/- controls with 6 settings
  • Safety shut-off on overheating
  • Silence insulation

Cat & Dog Dynamic U1 Vacuum Cleaner

The Miele Cat & Dog Dynamic U1 is the upright Cat & Dog version. An upright vacuum cleaner is best for dense, wall-to-wall carpeting. If your home has a majority of carpeting, an upright version may be beneficial.

*Some families choose to keep an upright vacuum cleaner upstairs, where the bedrooms feature carpeting, and a canister downstairs, where there is a variety of soft and hard flooring.

The Dynamic U1 Cat & Dog is an incredible, powerhouse carpet cleaner. The Cat & Dog U1 features a 1200 Watt Vortex motor that powers the vacuum suction AND a 4800 RPM roller-brush motor to provide a deep, deep cleaning of carpets and rugs. Dirt, dust, fur, and dander can’t hide from this vacuum, even in dense carpet fibers. It’s key to making this one of the best vacuum cleaners for pets.

Like the canister version, the Dynamic Cat & Dog also includes the Handheld Turbo Brush to clean upholstered surfaces, drapery, pet & human bedding, and more. It also includes the Active AirClean Charcoal Filter to eliminate – not just mask – offensive pet odors, even over time.

Includes:

  • STB101 – Hand held Turbo Brush
  • 5.45 qt HyClean dustbag with spring loaded sealing
  • Active AirClean Charcoal Filter
  • Integrated, On-Board Accessories – Natural Bristle Dusting Brush, Upholstery Nozzle, Extra-long Crevice Tool
  • Lightweight, Telescopic, Stainless Steel Wand

Customers love the extra bright headlight that illuminates their path and allows them to see exactly what they’re cleaning. The 54 ft cleaning radius means you’ll have fewer stops to unplug and re-plug as you clean, saving you time and backache!

But the real show-stopper on the Cat & Dog U1 is the automatic height adjustment. As you go from room to room and surface to surface, the Cat & Dog U1 will self-adjust based on the type of flooring it senses. The extra dense carpeting in the bedrooms will activate the Cat & Dog to raise its floor tool to prevent the beater bar from locking onto the longer fibers. Move to the jute rug in the study and the unit will drop to provide a deep clean on the firm material. It takes all the guesswork out of vacuuming!

0090002_miele-cat-dog-dynamic-u1-vacuumAdditional Features:

  • 54 ft cleaning radius with 39 foot cord and hose/wand
  • Headlamp to light the cleaning path
  • Swivel-neck for maximum maneuverability
  • Automatic carpet height adjustment
  • Dustbag change indicator
  • Filter Grill
  • Automatic dustbag lock
  • Safety shut-off on overheating

NuTone Central Vacuum Replacement

Replacing A NuTone Central Vacuum System

NuTone has been a recognized name in the central vacuum industry for decades. Much of their popularity peaked between the 1990’s and 2000’s and we saw thousands of NuTone power units installed throughout the country. Now that many of those units are beginning to show their age, we receive calls daily from customers looking for replacement options.

The most popular models from that era were the NuTone CV450W and CV353. These were powerhouse units that were built to last. However, even the best-made machines have their expiration date and each year we see more and more of these power units being replaced.

Check-mark-in-powerpoint-clipart-free-to-use-clip-art-resource.jpegIt’s important to note that just because your current system features a NuTone power unit, you do not have to choose another NuTone product. Your central vacuum piping will connect with almost any other brand. When shopping for a new unit, it’s wise to compare features, reviews, and costs of comparable models from other makers.

New NuTone Central Vacuum Units

NuTone’s new line of central vacuums feature updated designs and new technology. They offer a range of affordability ($300 – $800) and power (500 Air Watts – 1,040 Air Watts.) The larger models (the VX Series) are suitable for up to 12,000 square feet, making them even appropriate for some commercial installations. If it’s time to replace your NuTone central vacuum system, this is a good place to start.

Here is a quick comparison of current NuTone central vacuum models available in the U.S.
